The South Bay Burner community is a vibrant, diverse group… and all of them mirror various aspects of the overall Burning Man experience. In 2017, we had 39 Theme-camps originating from Southbay, plus an additional 45 remote Theme-camps that have camp members from the Southbay… you may choose to camp with friends from other cities, or welcome far-flung friends into your existing camps!

You have a variety of choices from creating your own formal theme-camp or bunking up with other formal theme-camps who already have registered for placement, to camping with friends or just on your own!

Note that Theme-Camp registration questionnaire goes live mid-Feb and must be submitted before end of April!

Why my Theme-Camp is NOT in the main directory?
So the Burning Man 2017 Theme-Camp Listing is showing ONLY those theme-camps that formally registered, on-time, to get their placement… AND the Theme-Camp requested for the information to be publicly available.
Registered theme-camps: Burning Man provides opportunity for folks to create & register formal Theme-Camps, and request an optimal playa placement… that is to predetermine adequate space for all the folks in the camp & where on the playa the Theme-Camp would be located. These formal Theme-Camps have met the criteria of contributing an overall experience to the playa community (see How do I create my own Theme-Camp section). And they also were okay for this information to be publicly available on Burning Man website & to the regions.
Unregistered Theme-Camps: There are a variety of reasons that you will NOT find a Theme-Camp’s information on the Burning Man directory listing… even if you know the camp or have visited them in the past.
- Theme-Camps may have requested for their information to NOT be widely shared, as they are NOT accepting new members or for any reason want to remain a private group.
- It is possible that the Theme-Camp missed the deadline to register this year!
- Sometimes folks get together and DO have a “theme” for their camp, but they have not registered & requested for a predetermined placement; they basically are happy with coming to the playa and the adventure of “finding” an available space for their folks and still contribute to the playa and the community… we would NOT know of these camps, unless the camp members or leaders would inform us about their existance!

| Contradance Community Camp | Experience the tribal, hypnotic magic of contradancing to amazing live music – everything from traditional celtic to an electronic mix of DJ’d records and live instruments. We dance every night (including some other dance forms) and in the mornings we have more dancing, concerts and jams. Contra is fast-paced yet easy to learn with a caller who instructs, but with room for dancers to improvise and embellish. There is no need to arrive with a partner – most dancers swap after each dance. Lines of couples flow through each other creating a bonding, playful, noncompetitive, all-ages community dance. There is no required footwork and contra is possible for many with disabilities. If you are smiling, you are doing it right. Everyone who shows up will have fun.

| Dust Circus | The Dust Circus camp invites guests to Circus, Theatrical, Mask, Costume shows on indoor and outdoor stages at our camp, as well as to try their skills on circus equipment. This year, we are inviting a famous avant-garde mime and theatrical group “blackSKYwhite” – who have performed at Edinburgh, Glastonbury and other festivals. | Love Puddle | A neighborhood bar, playground and lounge open every afternoon that serves the most refreshing punch on the playa, to enjoy before or after playing foursquare or swinging on the swings.
